Request Algorithms in Freenet-Style Peer-to-Peer Systems

چکیده
In most peer-to-peer systems, edge resources self-organize into overlay networks. At the core of Freenet-style peer-to-peer systems are insert and request algorithms that dynamically change the overlay network and replicate files on demand. We ran simulations to test how effective these algorithms are at improving the performance of subsequent queries. Our results show that for the original Freenet algorithms, performance improved less rapidly with a ratio of 99 requests to 1 insert than with an equal number of requests and inserts. This motivated us to design and test the performance of several new request algorithms.

The Persistence of Memory in Freenet
Most peer-to-peer systems are either unstructured file sharing networks that offer no data availability guarantees or tightly-structured file storage networks that do. The Freenet network occupies a middle ground in providing a looselystructured file storage service but not guaranteeing data persistence absolutely. We present simulation results showing that in practice not that many files ever ...
متن کاملProtecting Freedom of Information Online with Freenet
Privacy and free expression online are coming increasingly under threat from pervasive monitoring and filtering technologies as well as from corporate and governmental actions against those who disseminate controversial information. In response to these challenges, we are developing Freenet, an adaptive peer-to-peer file storage network that permits the publication and retrieval of data while p...
متن کاملPerformance Improvement of Hint-Based Locating & Routing Mechanism in P2P File-Sharing Systems
Hint-based Locating & Routing Mechanism (HBLR) derives from the locating & routing mechanism in Freenet. HBLR uses file location hint to enhance the performance of file searching and downloading. In comparison with its ancestor, HBLR saves storage space and reduces file request latency. However, because of the inherent fallibility of hint, employing location hint naively for file locating in P2...
متن کاملA Hint-based Locating & Routing Mechanism in Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Systems1
A hint-based file locating & routing mechanism was proposed to improve the performance of peer-to-peer file sharing systems. The framework was based on the Freenet document routing model with file location hints to enhance the performance of file searching and downloading. Experiment shows that the proposed mechanism improves the system performance by saving disk space, as well as reduces file ...
متن کاملAnthill: a Framework for the Design and the Analysis of Peer-to-Peer Systems
The peer-to-peer (P2P) paradigm for building distributed applications has recently gained attention from both industry and the media, following the enormous success of P2P systems like Napster, Gnutella and Freenet. The multitude of P2P projects appeared recently must confront common problems including security, reliability and routing. Unfortunately, traditional techniques for dealing with the...
